The Doctor
Dr. Athanasios Desalermos is a board-certified gastroenterologist. He graduated with high honors from the University of Athens School of Medicine and he continued his post-doctoral training at Harvard University Medical School.
He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Boston Medical Center and continued with a fellowship at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine where he trained next to Dr. William Sandborn the world’s top expert in the management of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
He has conducted extensive research in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease supported by research grants from the National Institutes of Health and his research has resulted in more than 17 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters.
He is an assistant professor of medicine at University of Massachusetts School of Medicine and is active in teaching resident physicians and medical students. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the American Gastrointestinal Association (AGA) and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.
He is originally from Greece where he lives with his wife and four daughters.
After successful exams he was admitted to the medical school of Athens from which he graduated in 2007. He completed his military duties in the 618th artillery unit in Plati, Evros in the most remote camp of the rural Evros where he stayed for the duration of his term.
Then after his successful participation in the pan-American medical certification exams, in which he excelled, he went to America and was appointed a salaried postdoctoral researcher in pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital of the University of Harvard, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
During his nearly 2-year stay at Harvard University, he participated in a multitude of research projects and published a plethora of basic and clinical research papers.
He completed his residency in internal pathology at Boston University, one of the leading pathology training centers in the United States of America. As a resident, he worked alongside Mayo Clinic’s current director of the Division of Idiopathic Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Dr. Francis Farraye. After written exams, he got the diploma to practice the medical specialty of pathology in America (Board Certified).
He continued his training in gastroenterology and hepatology at University California San Diego, which has been named the best gastroenterology university in the world (https://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/gastroenterology-hepatology). During his training he was distinguished for his clinical and research work and was awarded the Ruth L. Kirschstein Institutional National Research Service Award by the National Research Foundation of America. After written exams, he got the diploma to practice the medical specialty of gastroenterology and hepatology in America (Board Certified).
Mr. Desalermos was elected assistant professor of gastroenterology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and developed a pioneering gastroenterology and hepatology clinic in Massachusetts where he successfully treated thousands of clinical cases and performed over endoscopies. He was also actively involved in the education of students and medical residents and took part in the student admissions committee at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, specifically the MMI panel. His research work continued with a series of highly successful published research papers. He also had active collaborations with major American medical and research centers such as the Mayo Clinic and Brown University.
Upon his return to Greece, Mr. Desalermos organized and took over the management of the 4th gastroenterology and hepatology clinic of the Metropolitan General Hospital. Today, Dr. Desalermos continues to provide high-quality gastroenterological and hepatological care to Greek patients as the director of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic at Athens Medical Center. The goal of the clinic is to provide a high level of care to patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases. It aims at comprehensive diagnosis and treatment using the most advanced interventional techniques and modern medical knowledge.
