A study of pH in the esophagus involves a special device that we attach to the esophagus for 24 to 96 hours, the tube that connects to mouth to the stomach, and we measure how much acid from the stomach goes up to the esophagus and how often and for how long. It helps us to see if this stomach acid exposure is pathologic and causing symptoms of heartburn to the patient in order to guide treatment.
