Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure in which we examine the lining of the sigmoid colon and rectum, the two lowest parts of the colon. The process is the same as a colonoscopy, in that the colonoscope, a thin flexible tube with a camera and light at the end, is inserted into the anus and advanced to evaluate the lining of the lower colon. This procedure is a good option as in a number of instances it may not be necessary to evaluate the whole colon. The preparation for the flexible sigmoidoscopy is easier. Tissue can still be sampled and growths, like polyps, can be removed during this procedure. You will be under sedation for this procedure.
