Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome, or commonly called “IBS”, is a disease that affects your bowel habits. This disease may cause abdominal pain, abdominal cramping, abdominal discomfort, bloating, gas as well as irregular bowel habits that could range from more frequent (diarrhea) to less frequent (constipation) bowel movements or switching back and forth between diarrhea and constipation. The exact etiology of IBS is unclear but likely the disease has multiple causes contributing to it, including changes in the motility of large intestine, infections, diet and stress and other psychological etiologies. It is the most common gastrointestinal condition and the second most common cause of absence from work. Up to 20 percent of people in the general population have symptoms of IBS, but only a minority of those seek medical help.
Diagnosis is established after other intestinal disorders which have similar symptoms are excluded. For that, several tests, including blood, stool or a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy, may be needed. IBS treatments target the various symptoms of the condition, they may include the diet, medications or other noninvasive techniques. In our clinic we follow an holistic approach and we can accurately diagnose and successfully treat this annoying and resistant-to-treatment condition.
